About Paul Pavliscak

Medicine and Healthcare

Paul Pavliscak began his journey toward medicine with a moment of clarity that arrived unusually early in life. At three years old, he accompanied his father to oncology appointments, observing the routine and the calm authority of the physician. During one visit, he quietly expressed that he wanted to do the same work someday. It was not an extraordinary statement because of its wording, but because of the certainty behind it, a sense of direction that felt sincere rather than rehearsed.

Paul’s father passed away soon after those early hospital visits, and that loss gave new weight to the childhood statement. Growing up with prolonged exposure to illness shaped his understanding of how medical conditions affect entire families, not only the individual patient. He witnessed how physicians often embody steadiness during periods of fear, uncertainty, and grief. Those experiences gradually formed his belief that medicine is not only a technical profession but also a long-term commitment to empathy, patience, and presence.

Family Influence and Personal Grounding

His upbringing reflects the importance of support systems and perseverance. Raised by a single mother who frequently worked multiple jobs, he grew up seeing consistency and dedication modeled daily. Those sacrifices created stability during difficult years and taught him that effort and accountability matter long before recognition ever arrives.

Pavliscak also benefited from the guidance of extended family members who stepped in when needed most. His uncle provided ongoing financial support throughout his education while also serving as a steady father figure, alongside his grandfather. Together, they offered structure, encouragement, and perspective during his most formative years, reinforcing the idea that responsibility extends beyond personal ambition.

These relationships instilled in him an expectation that he would be responsible for more than himself and help others succeed as well. That awareness continues to shape how he approaches both professional goals and personal commitments.

Baseball as a Training Ground for Discipline

Paul found another major influence through baseball, which remained a constant presence throughout his life. The sport was never handed to him on a platter. At eleven years old, he was told by coaches that he might be better suited for something else. Instead of stepping away, he chose to commit to steady improvement rather than quick validation.

He spent countless hours taking lessons, joining travel teams, and refining fundamentals, all of which were supported without hesitation by his mother. That persistence eventually led him to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, where he earned a spot on the baseball team, and later to Kalamazoo College in Michigan, where he played catcher for the Division III Hornets.

The catcher position aligned naturally with his temperament. Catchers manage game tempo, communicate constantly with pitchers, analyze situations in real time, and maintain composure while absorbing physical strain. Those responsibilities reinforced leadership, adaptability, and focus, qualities that carried forward long after his playing days ended.

One experience from 2014 remains especially meaningful. His team won a Father’s Day tournament while wearing jerseys bearing the initials of fathers who were lost but never forgotten. For him, the moment symbolized more than athletic success. It represented the connection between memory, effort, and the belief that progress can coexist with reflection.

Academic Rigor and Early Medical Exposure

Athletic and academic expectations developed side by side for Paul Pavliscak, never competing with one another. He graduated Cum Laude from both the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Kalamazoo College while maintaining a demanding training and competition schedule.

Throughout his undergraduate years, he balanced coursework with more than 40 hours per week devoted to baseball, earning a 3.58 GPA. His academic focus supported a growing interest in medicine, which he further explored through physician shadowing across multiple specialties and clinical environments.

At Ascension Providence Hospital in Paul Pavliscak, Rochester Hills, MI, he gained hands-on experience in laboratory medicine by observing hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and blood bank operations. He also observed antigen typing and the preparation of pathology specimens used in cancer diagnosis, gaining insight into diagnostic processes that support clinical decision-making.

He later spent time at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, shadowing pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Peter Gerrits. During that experience, he observed physician-patient interactions, data management responsibilities, and the importance of confidentiality. The opportunity highlighted how long-term relationships between physicians and patients are built on trust and consistency.

His exposure to family medicine offered a broader perspective on patient care, demonstrating how medical practice adapts to meet individual needs across different stages of life. These varied experiences reinforced his understanding of medicine as both a science and a service.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pavliscak participated in a structured virtual shadowing program through the Medical school headquarters. The program included physician-led discussions and formal evaluations, allowing continued professional development despite limited in-person access to clinical settings.

Work Ethic Beyond the Classroom

His work history reflects a willingness to take on physically demanding, detail-oriented roles. While employed as a FedEx Ground Package Handler in Lake Orion, he worked overnight shifts lifting hundreds of packages per hour within strict time constraints. The position required stamina, precision, and constant coordination with a team to meet operational goals.

Service and Overall Perspective

Paul has also committed significant time to community service. He volunteered 246 hours at Oakland Hope Food Pantry and Thrift Store in Pontiac, Michigan, assisting with grocery distribution, furniture pickups, inventory organization, and general support wherever needed most.

Now a medical student, he continues to carry those values forward. He remains grounded by traditions that shaped his upbringing, including family meals, a lifelong appreciation for Major League Baseball and the Detroit Tigers, and maintaining close relationships with the people who remind him where he started.

Growing up near Rochester Hills and now living in Oakland Township, Paul Pavliscak reflects a perspective shaped by loss, discipline, and gratitude. His story represents a promise made early in life and honored through consistent effort, humility, and respect for the responsibilities that accompany the practice of medicine.
